Sickness and Preparation

Published on 6 October 2025 at 18:07

A couple days after returning from Florida, I unfortunately ended up with a cold. I had taken the Monday after returning off in order to get some rest from my travel day, then had the opportunity to meet up with a couple of my missionaries who were in town on Tuesday. However, by Tuesday night, the all-too-familiar feeling of coming down with a cold had crept up, and by Wednesday morning it was official. While I managed to still get in some video calls on Wednesday and Thursday, I mostly tried to rest and recuperate in order to be healthy as quickly as possible. By Friday morning, I had turned a corner, but am still dealing with some lingering sinus pain and congestion. Please pray that my health continues to improve this week, so when I head to Alaska on Saturday, I'm ready for the work ahead of me!

Beautiful Alaska! These pictures are from when I went to Alaska in August of 2022 to serve on the worship team for their Field Conference. While we were there, we had opportunity to go on a day cruise in Seward, AK, as well as a "flight-seeing" trip where we got to see a glacier up close and personal!

Why Alaska now?

This time, I'm going to Alaska with a couple of my co-workers to put on a debriefing conference for some of the missionaries serving there who have difficulty getting to the conference when held in Michigan.  The field leadership in AK reached out to us to see if we could do this debrifing, as it's actually less expensive to fly the 3 of us out there than for the families attending to come out to Michigan (and the field is generously picking up the tab). As a Member Care Coach, I'll be responsible to do sessions on self-care and spiritual disciplines, as well as provide debriefing for 2 of the units in attendance.  I had already committed to serving in Thailand at the women's retreat before this opportunity to serve in AK came up, so when they reached out to us, I was grateful they were looking at the week before so I could manage both. I had also been right on the verge of purchasing my plane ticket for Thailand, but they had contacted us just in time for me to plan my flights so I would go there directly from AK!

Prayer Requests:

- For my health: that I will recover completely from my cold before travelling to AK, that God would keep me healthy during the trips

- For my continued preparation: I still need to work on my sessions for AK and on the worship for Thailand

- For my work: I still have a lot of office work to try and keep up on amidst my travels, which has been a challenge!

- For my fund-raising: I'm currently at 48% of my total need, and am looking to raise the remaining $1800 before I head to Thailand. I was able to charge the costs of the trip to my work account, so everything is already purchased and the raised funds go directly toward repaying that account. This does mean that I have the opportunity to continue raising funds even after the 17th, but I would love to not have that need still on my mind while serving at the retreat.

If you are interested in contributing a financial gift toward the remaining $1800, here is the link: www.send.org/give/missionaries/Rice

A HUGE thank you to those who have already given!

Thank you ALL for joining me in the work God is doing!
